On Tuesday, Yodel announced it was the victim of a cyberattack that disrupted its regular operations. The UK-based company informed its customers about the cyber incident via its official Twitter page and its website. Yodel is currently investigating the incident with the help of third-party experts. The company is yet to release information about the nature of the attack and its impact beyond operational delays. Yodel said it does not store or process customers’ payment information. Therefore, the attack on its systems couldn’t possibly have compromised such sensitive data.
Customers Should Expect Delivery Delays
While Yodel said it has restored its service, the company noted that “there may still be slight delays to deliveries.” Yodel customers started facing issues with the delivery service over the weekend after the company’s package tracking and customer services went down. Some customers reportedly said they did not receive any information about their packages for at least four days. Yodel informed eBay sellers about the incident through private messages. According to the company, the attack affected part of its systems. Yodel said it has informed the relevant authorities such as the National Cyber Security Centre, the National Crime Agency, and the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Customers Urged to Look Out for Suspicious Activity
While Yodel stressed that it does not collect or store payment data, the company has asked its customers to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and to watch out for suspicious emails or communication. “Avoid responding to, clicking on links, or downloading attachments from suspicious email addresses. If you are asked for personal information by someone purporting to be Yodel employee, please let us know immediately,” the company added. While Yodel hasn’t provided details about the incident, one cybersecurity researcher speculated that it may have been a ransomware attack. The company said it will provide an update once it concludes its investigation. Cyberattacks have become increasingly common in the UK. The 2022 Cyberthreat Defense Report by CyberEdge Group revealed that 81.4% of organizations in the UK experienced at least one cyberattack in the previous year. In February, another popular UK company, KP snacks, which is behind McCoy’s crisp and other popular snacks, suffered a ransomware attack that led to delays and cancellations across the UK.
